After US President Donald Trump announced the appointments of SEC Chairman Paul Atkins and Artificial Intelligence and Crypto Enthusiast David Sacks, the last important candidate who can have a big impact on the crypto industry is preparing to finalize his selection for the position of CFTC Chairman.
CFTC Chairman and Crypto
It remains unclear when Trump will announce his candidate for CFTC Chairman. Head of Digital Commerce Cody Carbone stated that the Trump transition team is not close to choosing a candidate yet. The appointment of the CFTC’s previous chairman, Chris Giancarlo, in March during his first term hints at how long the process might take.
Former CFTC Commissioner Brian Quintenz currently serves as a16z head of crypto policy and is among the leading candidates for the presidency. Quintenz has advised the Trump transition team on crypto policies and has a strong resume, making him an ambitious candidate. Especially for altcoin investors, the appointment of the CFTC is at least as important as the SEC, because the bill approved by the House of Representatives gives authority to the CFTC in most altcoins. Additionally, with the Trump administration ending the securities/commodity debate in altcoins, the CFTC will likely be the agency that takes charge of most cryptocurrencies.
Most Talked About Candidate: Summer Mersinger
CFTC Commission member Summer Mersinger stands out as the most talked about candidate among experts. Mersinger is favored for his advocacy for the crypto industry and his frequent speaking presence at crypto policy events. Being a current commissioner could make it easier for him to ascend to the chairman position without going through the Senate confirmation process.
The selection of the CFTC Chairman, who could play an important role in crypto regulations, increases uncertainty in the industry. The selected candidate is expected to influence policies to classify crypto assets as commodities.
Other potential candidates include former commissioners Jill Sommers, Josh Sterling and Neal Kumar. Kumar draws attention with his history of supporting the policies of both parties. Sommers and Sterling, on the other hand, are more conservative.
Although some sources also bring forward Caroline Pham and Perianne Boring as candidates for CFTC President, it is stated that these are not finalized candidates. There are differences of opinion over Pham’s connections to Polymarket and Boring’s role.
As a result, while the Trump administration is expected to make a clear choice for the CFTC Chairman, the process has not yet been decided. The effects of the election process on the crypto industry continue to be closely monitored.
